How to choose the weight of your jig

Comment choisir le poids de son jig

As you probably know, there is a wide variety of jigs on the market. They differ mainly in their head type , their colors, but also in their weight. Indeed, a jig can weigh, on average, from 1 to 300 grams!

The weight of the lure, like its other characteristics, should not be chosen randomly. Here are some rules to follow.

The depth of the body of water

First, consider the water depth to choose the right weight for your jig. Smaller jigs are suitable if you're fishing near the shore or on the surface. Conversely, deeper areas require heavier lures so they sink effectively to the fish you're targeting. As a general rule, we recommend a weight of one ounce for every 100 feet of water. Fishing on the fjord is a good example of this rule. It's not uncommon to see anglers using jigs weighing up to 6 or 7 ounces while fishing in areas with water depths exceeding 700 feet.

The strength of the current

Naturally, the strength of the current also plays a role in your decision-making. Opt for lighter lures in calm waters. Heavier jigs, on the other hand, are your best allies in strong currents, ensuring stability. Again, the Saguenay Fjord is a good example, as the current is extremely powerful during spring tides. Some anglers will even use jig heads of 3 oz or more in just 200 feet of water.

The equipment

Finally, the number of grams of your lure must be adapted to your fishing equipment.

For example, a rod whose power rating isn't appropriate for the lure's weight is likely to be damaged during casting. Logically, the higher the power rating, the heavier the jigs you can use. Take the time to read the manufacturer's specifications before you begin. The maximum weight the rod was designed to handle is often indicated on the rod itself.

In conclusion

In short, the weight of your jigs must be adapted to the water depth, the current strength, and the specific characteristics of your fishing tackle. Need help choosing your lure? Contact one of our specialists!
